Domaine des Charmilles is a great campsite in the Royan, with a real French flavour. It’s set on the picturesque Fouras peninsula, opposite the Ile d’Oleron, close to some fascinating sights such as Fort Boyard, Aix Island and Fort Enet.
The campsite itself is peaceful with a fantastic pool complex and some activities for children. There is a children’s club for those aged 5-12, and space to play football and table tennis. During peak season in the evening, the campsite organises entertainment including dances, mini disco for children and tasting evenings. Within five kilometres of the campsite, horse-riding, mini-golf, golf and tennis courts are available. Bikes can be hired onsite – it is well worth exploring the local area on two wheels.
The town of Fouras, just 3km away, has five fantastic beaches – the biggest being the Grand Plage. This beach is great for children with its gently sloping shores and calm waters. For extra reassurance, the beach has lifeguards during July and August.
The area surrounding the campsite is well worth exploring with the fascinating cities of La Rochelle and Roquefort both within a 25 minute drive. The Ile de Ré and Ile d’Oleron are both within an hour’s drive from the campsite and are brilliant for exploring on bike.
This region of France is rich in history so it’s worth taking the time to drive around and explore. Fouras has many landmarks of this regions turbulent past including Fort Vauban and Fort Enet. A must do in the area is to take a boat Ile d’Aix from Fouras, and to enjoy a boat ride around Fort Boyard. Enquire at the local tourist office or on the campsite for the best options for your party.
